Do you want reliable solar power for your motorhome, boat or off-grid project? Then the solar charge controller is the brain and heart of your system. It determines how much energy actually reaches your battery and how long it lasts. And when it comes to maximum efficiency and reliability, there is hardly any way around a Victron MPPT charge controller.
But this is where the confusion begins: SmartSolar or BlueSolar? 100/20 or 75/15? And what's the Bluetooth connection all about?
At Verkauf-Bochum.de, we pool our practical experience from designing countless energy systems. We will guide you step by step to the right controller for your project and prevent you from making expensive mistakes. If your project is more complex or you would like personal reassurance for your decision, we are always available for individual advice.
A Victron SmartSolar MPPT is the best choice for 95% of all applications in the camper, boat or small off-grid sector. As a smart version, it has integrated Bluetooth, is very easy to set up via app and delivers all important data directly to your cell phone. You can determine the right size (e.g. 100/30) based on the voltage of your solar modules (volts) and the maximum charging current (amps) for your battery.
Time and again we see systems that are equipped with cheap PWM controllers. It's like coupling a Formula 1 engine with a bicycle gearbox. A PWM controller (pulse width modulation) basically just switches the solar modules on and off. This works, but you are wasting a lot of energy.
An MPPT controller (Maximum Power Point Tracking) is the intelligent gear shift for your solar system. It converts the high voltage from the solar panel into the optimum charging voltage for your battery and maximizes the current.
The advantages of the ultra-fast Victron MPPT are enormous in practice:
Conclusion from our practical experience: The additional price for a Victron MPPT pays for itself very quickly due to the additional yield and the longer service life of your battery. Saving on the charge controller is the wrong strategy.
Victron offers two main series: SmartSolar and BlueSolar. Technically speaking, the charging algorithms are identical. The only, but crucial, difference is connectivity.

Conclusion from our practical experience: Go for the SmartSolar. The minimal surcharge for the convenience and simple diagnostic capability is one of the best investments in your entire system.
The model designations such as "MPPT 100/30" look complicated, but are very easy to decipher. If you understand these two numbers, you can never buy the wrong controller again.
The first number (e.g. 100): Maximum PV open circuit voltage (volts)
This number indicates the maximum amount of voltage (volts) that can flow from the solar panels into the controller. This is the most important and hardest limit! If it is exceeded, the controller will be destroyed.
The second number (e.g. 30): Maximum charging current (amperes)
This number defines the maximum amount of current (amperes) the charge controller can charge your battery with.
Take the data sheet of your solar modules and look for the value "Open circuit voltage" or "Open circuit voltage (Voc)".
⚠️ E xpert warning: The cold error!
The Voc is specified at 25 °C. Solar cells generate a higher voltage in cold weather! To be on the safe side, always add a safety buffer of 15-20 % to the Voc value. It is always best to use the Victron MPPT Calculator to obtain an optimum design for your system.
Practical example: Calculate voltage
✅ Our choice: A regulator in the 75 V class (e.g. MPPT 75/15).
❌ Incorrect choice: Connect two modules in series (voltage > 75V will destroy the regulator & warranty).
There is a simple formula for this:
Total solar power (watts) / battery voltage (volts) = maximum charging current (amps)
Practical example: Calculating the charging current
✅ Our choice: SmartSolar MPPT 100/50 (delivers up to 50 A).
❌ Wrong choice: SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 (would reduce the output to 30 A and leave approx. 240 watts unused!).
💡 Tip: Use the official Victron MPPT Calculator. It is a powerful tool that also takes the temperature effect into account.
Quick-Reference-Tabelle für gängige Setups (12V-Systeme
| Solarleistung (ca.) | Gängige Module | Empfohlener Victron SmartSolar MPPT |
|---|---|---|
| Bis 220 Wp | 1-2x 100W Modul | SmartSolar MPPT 75/15 |
| Bis 290 Wp | 2-3x 100W Modul | SmartSolar MPPT 100/20 |
| Bis 440 Wp | 2x 200W Modul | SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 |
| Bis 700 Wp | 2-3x 200-220W Modul | SmartSolar MPPT 100/50 |
| Über 700 Wp | Größere Anlagen | SmartSolar MPPT 150/60 oder größer |
💡 Note: These are approximate values. Always carry out the exact calculation with your module data! With 24V or 48V systems, the required charging current is halved or quartered so that you can operate larger solar arrays with smaller controllers.
Installation is simple, but the wrong sequence can be expensive.
After connection, configure the controller in the VictronConnect app. Simply select the appropriate battery type (AGM, GEL, or the default setting for lithium/LiFePO4) and the system starts working.
A Victron solar charge controller can work alone, but it shows its true strength in a team. It communicates with other Victron components via the VE.Direct or VE.Can interfaces.
This enables perfect management of your entire energy system and is the reason why professionals rely on the sophisticated system from Victron Energy. The system can be perfectly combined with energy storage systems from other quality manufacturers such as Voltsmile to store the energy generated in the best possible way.
A Victron solar charge controller is more than just a component - it is an investment in the efficiency, safety and lifespan of your entire solar system.

The solar charge controller is the intelligent manager between your solar modules and your battery. It has two core tasks:
A high-quality regulator directly determines the daily energy yield and the service life of your entire system.
In short: A PWM controller is like a bicycle gearbox for a racing engine - it gives away massive amounts of power. The intelligent Victron MPPT algorithm gets up to 30 % more energy from your solar modules, especially in cloudy conditions or partial shading. The investment in MPPT always pays off thanks to the increased yield and longer battery life.
Follow our 2-step test:
Everything. Using the free VictronConnect app, you can easily set up the controller, monitor live data (current solar power, charging current) and carry out firmware updates. The BlueSolar model requires separate accessories (e.g. a Bluetooth dongle). The SmartSolar is the more convenient and better all-in-one solution for 95% of users.
Victron's true strength lies in its extreme scalability, ranging from the smallest mobile to large industrial systems. A single SmartSolar controller is the perfect solution for campers, boats and small off-grid systems. In larger, self-sufficient domestic or commercial systems, several solar charge controllers can be synchronized via a central control unit such as the Victron Cerbo GX and seamlessly combined with inverters and battery management systems. We support you with our expertise precisely in the planning of such complex systems.
Very simple. Victron is continuously improving its software. With a SmartSolar controller, you can install updates for efficiency improvements and new functions directly via the VictronConnect app on your smartphone. This is done in just a few clicks and ensures that your system is always up to date.
Check the "4 S's":
You can see the PV voltage in the VictronConnect app. If this is close to 0V, the problem lies with the modules or their cabling.
Yes, this is conditionally possible and is called "over-paneling". The Victron controller intelligently limits its output current to the maximum value (30A for the 100/30). This allows you to achieve a good yield even in bad weather.
BUT: The maximum PV voltage (the first number, e.g. 100V) must never be exceeded!
