The model designations such as "MPPT 100/30" look complicated, but are very easy to decipher. If you understand these two numbers, you can never buy the wrong controller again.

The first number (e.g. 100): Maximum PV open circuit voltage (volts)

This number indicates the maximum amount of voltage (volts) that can flow from the solar panels into the controller. This is the most important and hardest limit! If it is exceeded, the controller will be destroyed.

The second number (e.g. 30): Maximum charging current (amperes)

This number defines the maximum amount of current (amperes) the charge controller can charge your battery with.


Step 1: Find the voltage of your solar panels (Voc)

Take the data sheet of your solar modules and look for the value "Open circuit voltage" or "Open circuit voltage (Voc)".

  • For parallel connection of modules: The voltage (Voc) remains the same, the currents add up.
  • When modules are connected in series: The voltages (Voc) add up, the current remains the same.

⚠️ E xpert warning: The cold error!

The Voc is specified at 25 °C. Solar cells generate a higher voltage in cold weather! To be on the safe side, always add a safety buffer of 15-20 % to the Voc value. It is always best to use the Victron MPPT Calculator to obtain an optimum design for your system.

Practical example: Calculate voltage

  • Voc according to data sheet: 45 V
  • Safety margin (20 %): + 9 V
  • Required minimum voltage of the controller: 54 V

Our choice: A regulator in the 75 V class (e.g. MPPT 75/15).

Incorrect choice: Connect two modules in series (voltage > 75V will destroy the regulator & warranty).

Step 2: Calculate the required charging current (amperes)

There is a simple formula for this:

Total solar power (watts) / battery voltage (volts) = maximum charging current (amps)

Practical example: Calculating the charging current

  • System: 600Wp solar power on a 12V battery system
  • Calculation: 600 W / 12 V = 50 A
  • Required minimum charging current: approx. 50 A

Installation & setup: The 2 golden rules

Installation is simple, but the wrong sequence can be expensive.

  1. Always connect the battery first!

    The solar charge controller must first learn the system voltage (12V, 24V etc.) from the battery. If you connect the solar modules first, the controller may be damaged. So: battery first, then solar. When disconnecting, do exactly the opposite.
  2. Fuse between controller and battery!

    A suitable fuse is essential between the positive pole of the controller output and the positive pole of the battery. It protects your cables from overloading and the risk of fire. The fuse value should be slightly higher than the maximum charging current of the regulator (e.g. 40A fuse for a 30A regulator). Be sure to read the operating instructions!

After connection, configure the controller in the VictronConnect app. Simply select the appropriate battery type (AGM, GEL, or the default setting for lithium/LiFePO4) and the system starts working.

My Victron charge controller is not charging. What can I do?

Check the "4 S's":

  • Sun(is it shining?)
  • Voltage(is there enough voltage from the module?)

You can see the PV voltage in the VictronConnect app. If this is close to 0V, the problem lies with the modules or their cabling.

Can I connect more solar power than the controller can nominally handle (e.g. 500Wp on a 100/30)?

Yes, this is conditionally possible and is called "over-paneling". The Victron controller intelligently limits its output current to the maximum value (30A for the 100/30). This allows you to achieve a good yield even in bad weather.

BUT: The maximum PV voltage (the first number, e.g. 100V) must never be exceeded!
