Battery Management System smallBMS NG with pre-alarm

The smallBMS can replace the VE.Bus BMS V2 in several applications. However, it is not suitable for use with VE.Bus MultiPlus and Quattro inverters/chargers: This is because there is no VE.Bus interface. The smallBMS is designed for use with Victron Smart LiFePo4 batteries with M8 round connectors.

The smallBMS has two outputs, similar to the VE.Bus BMS V2.

The smallBMS NG with pre-alarm is an all-encompassing battery management system (BMS) for Victron lithium NG batteries (not to be confused with the lithium smart batteries without NG). These batteries are lithium iron phosphate batteries (LiFePO4), which are available in 12.8 V, 25.6 V and 51.2 V and with different capacities. They can be connected in series, parallel or in a combination of both, so that a battery bank can be designed for system voltages of 12 V, 24 V or 48 V. When configuring a battery bank with 12 V or 24 V batteries, a maximum of 50 batteries can be used, while up to 25 batteries can be used with 48 V batteries. This allows a maximum energy storage capacity of 192 kWh with 12 V batteries, up to 384 kWh with 24 V batteries and 12 kWh with 48 V batteries

The smallBMS NG is a simple and cost-effective alternative to the VE.Bus BMS NG, but does not have a VE.Bus interface and is therefore not suitable for use with VE.Bus MultiPlus and Quattro inverters/chargers.

  • Bluetooth Smart: The smallBMS NG includes Bluetooth Smart for wireless configuration, monitoring and firmware updates via the VictronConnect app.
  • Load disconnect output: Controls the remote on/off switching of a BatteryProtect, inverter, DCDC converter or other loads with remote on/off function. Thanks to its maximum output current of 1 A, it can even control a high-current relay or a contactor. Note that a non-inverting or inverting cable may be required for switching on/off. Please refer to the manual.
  • Charge disconnect output: Controls the remote on/off switching of chargers such as the Smart Charger IP43, a Cyrix-Li-Charge relay, a Cyrix-Li-ct battery coupler or a BatteryProtect. Please note that the load disconnect output (LOAD) is not suitable for supplying an inductive load such as a relay coil
  • Pre-alarm output: Triggers a visible or audible warning when the battery voltage is low, at least 30 seconds before the load disconnect output is deactivated due to cell undervoltage. Can trigger a relay, LED or audible alarm. Maximum output current: 1 A (not short-circuit proof).
  • Connection for remote on/off switching: Allows remote control of the load and charge disconnect outputs. When switched off, both outputs become potential-free and the connected loads and chargers are switched off.
  • LED indicators: The smallBMS NG has two LEDs: a blue LED for Bluetooth status and a red LED for warnings and alarm errors.
  • Configurable discharge lower limit: Sets the minimum SoC to prevent excessive discharge while providing enough energy for self-discharge. A low SoC warning is triggered in VictronConnect, activating the pre-alarm output when the lower discharge limit is almost reached. A low SoC alarm is triggered when the lower discharge limit is reached and the BMS immediately disables the output of the automatic transfer switch, effectively switching off all loads it controls.
